This year marks the 40th Annual Oktoberfest for one little Alabama town. Cullman’s Oktoberfest is known as one of North Alabama’s biggest and best celebrations of the season.

Cullman’s German ties go all the way back to the 1800s when Colonel Johann Gottfried Cullmann came to Alabama from his home in Germany. By 1873, he and others found themselves living in the town where other German immigrants would soon call home.

Now, the town celebrates its German heritage every September during Oktoberfest. It all starts Thursday, September 30th with an opening ceremony that includes the traditional tapping of the keg and introducing the new Burgermeister.

The celebration runs all weekend long with events like the Polkawagen, a cornhole tournament, stein hoisting, the weiner dog race, a pumpkin patch, brat eating contests, an axe-throwing tournament, live music and much more.
