Skincare through the decades: caring for your skin as you age

Skincare through the decades Hannah Brezinski, Owner and Esthetician at Glitter and Moss, shares tips for caring for your skin as you age

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (TENNESSEE VALLEY LIVING) - Aging is a natural and inevitable part of life. It’s not something to dread or fear as we add years to our lives.

“By embracing the natural process of aging while taking the steps to care for our skin, we can take actionable steps to show up representing ourselves in a way that makes us feel good and comfortable in our skin during each decade of life we’re currently in,” says Owner and Esthetician at Glitter and Moss, Hannah Brezinski.

Things like getting enough sleep, hydrating your body from the inside out, adding nutritious foods to your daily meals, and maintaining low-stress levels are all basic foundational tips for maintaining healthy skin.

Her clients often ask Hannah, “How do I care for my skin and make the most of my skin health at this current stage in my life?”

Here’s what she recommends:

Tweens/Teens

A major trend Hannah is seeing is kids ages 8 to 13, becoming crazed over skincare. With the rise of social media “Get unready with me” videos, it’s wild out there right now.

Parents: we empathize with you. It’s important to remember if you have a child around this age, their skin barriers are still developing, and cannot tolerate strong acids and high-percentage ingredients in their daily routine. To book a consultation at Glitter and Moss, click here.

Here’s what she recommends: Establish a solid foundational skincare routine. This would include a good cleanser, a moisturizer, and SPF. Maybe some fun sheet masks and eye gels. Very simple! The goal is to keep things simple to protect those developing skin barriers. Doing too much too early can cause of host of issues down the line.

20s + 30s

As we move into the late 20s and early 30s, you’ll start to notice issues arising. Now is the time to establish a relationship with an esthetician! To book a consultation at Glitter and Moss, click here.

You should be moving into preventative treatments like chemical peels to dial down sun damage caused in our teens and 20s. We may be incorporating some Botox in our late 20s and early 30s, which has become more common over the last 5 to 10 years.

Other treatments typically include microchanneling/needling, incorporating more potent products into our routines like a consistent retinol, and more targeted serums to address concerns.

Here’s what she recommends: Establish a consistent skincare routine. This will generally consist of a cleanser, an antioxidant serum, a moisturizer, and some sort of SPF of 30 or above daily. A proper cleansing routine at this stage is so important! Treatments Glitter and Moss commonly provide to clients are custom facials, hydrafacials, and mild downtime chemical peels.

40s

The 40s are the new 30s, y’all. Hannah has been seeing a major uptick in the use of clinical-grade skincare, starting at a much younger age than ever. We’re taking care of our skin at an earlier age than our parents did. We have access to more information than ever about how to keep our skin healthy!

During our 40s, Hormones do fluctuate because of perimenopause/menopause which can lead to some physiological changes when it comes to your skin. Conditions like adult acne, skin sensitivity, visible capillaries,  redness, puffiness, and volume loss around the eyes. The conditions we experience can tend to be all over the place as our hormones fluctuate in a unique way person-to-person. This can be true for whichever age group you fall into here. It is also extremely beneficial at this stage of life to start adding full-body skincare products and hydrating creams.

50s + 60s and beyond:

Our natural production of hyaluronic acid dips in our 50s. Hydration and exfoliation are very important at this stage of life to keep skin cells turning over to create new healthy cells. Incorporating Growth Factors and Stem Cell serums is a great way to support our skin’s natural regeneration process. To book a consultation at Glitter and Moss, click here.

Here’s what she recommends: Focus on skin hydration, with ingredients like BetaGlucan, Hyaluronic Acid, richer moisturizers, and creams to help keep that healthy “bounce” in our skin. Consider treatments such as laser resurfacing, deeper chemical peels, and hydrating custom facials to keep your skin nice and healthy.
