Huntsville — HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (TENNESSEE VALLEY LIVING) - The Tennessee Valley is home to many things that make it unique. From the beautiful mountain views to the southern charm that exudes throughout the community, there’s a lot to love about this area. Another aspect that makes this region even more noteworthy is the abundance of pure musical talent you can come across the more you explore The Valley.
Thanks to more showcasing opportunities that have arisen, like the addition of new music venues, like the Orion Amphitheater, and local organizations like the Huntsville Music Office, a spotlight has been placed on local acts, and stars right in our backyard are getting their chance to shine on stage in front of the community they live in. To highlight some of those who shine bright, we’re giving you an all-access pass to get to know them better through a segment called, ‘Sounds of the Valley.’
We introduce you to Sharona Drake-Henderson. She is a woman who’s had her hand in every aspect of the entertainment business. From performing on stage to working behind the scenes in managing roles in the industry, it’s safe to say the Oakwood University alumna knows her way around the music world. She is now using her talents to help a new generation of artists grow in their craft right here in the Rocket City. She is the founder of Heard First Huntsville, an organization that focuses on building the brand and image of artists right here in our area.

Henderson recounted her journey through the music industry. She reminisced about how music played a major role in her life throughout childhood and into her adult years. She also shared how her experiences have taken her all over the country through various roles, but all the roads eventually led her back to The Valley.
Now Henderson has planted her roots in The Rocket City to help grow the next generation of entertainers. Through Heard First Huntsville, artists not only have the chance to build their brands but also be a part of an entertainment-based community as they navigate the ins and outs of the industry. From connections built through Heard First, those artists get more access to networking and performance opportunities.

Henderson and guitarist Aaron Staples gave us a live performance of her original song, “Summertime.” She shared that the birth of her first child inspired writing and performing this song. Let me just say being in the studio while the dynamic duo was live in action was truly an experience. As a listener, I could feel the raw emotion that can only be described as the aural embodiment of ‘a mother’s love’.
She also gave us a glimpse into her life aside from music, including how she found the light following a dark time in her past. Henderson has openly discussed being a survivor of sexual abuse. She turned that tough situation into something that could shed light on the lives of others going through similar hardships. Henderson wrote a book called “After They Touched Me,” where she shares her journey of picking up the pieces after trauma.
Henderson, who is now a mother of two, also talked about her love of creating content for parents. From podcasts to social media videos, she has released content on various topics that moms and dads everywhere can relate to.
