HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (TENNESSEE VALLEY LIVING) - For Charles Esten, music was his first love. While in school at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, Esten formed a band with his friends called “N’est Pas.”

After graduation, all his friends wanted to go on to become lawyers and doctors, but for him, he was left without a band, So, he decided to try acting. He figured he’d find another band, but it never happened. Years later, he was cast in the show Nashville and his love for music was reborn.

Music always had its hooks in me.

Over the years, Esten has had many notable roles. After playing Buddy Holly in a musical production, he was cast in Whose Line is it Anyway? where he’d improvise songs with Wayne Brady, The Office, and then the Disney sitcom Jessie.

Looking back on his time on Whose Line, he says he can remember driving home from filming and noticing his face was hurting from having laughed so much. Of course, Nashville is also special for not only bringing music back into his life but for also being able to work alongside a talented list of co-stars like Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere.

Eston says that Netflix’s Outer Banks came out of nowhere for him.

They called me up and said ‘Chip, you played a good dad on Nashville, we’re gonna start you off as a good dad and then he’s gonna go a little sideways.’

I never stopped writing. The show ‘Nashville’ really made them both (acting and singing) realities. It got me on the stage with The Grand Ole Opry

Earlier this year, Eston released his debut album, “Love Ain’t Pretty.” Easton says love isn’t always pretty. It can be hard, it can wreck you, and it can leave you on your knees but he says on the record, it’s beautiful.

Life is hard, but what you find out is...it’s hard but that’s what gives it beauty and depth. These are the songs that take you on that journey.
