5 things to actually do this new year

We’re getting rid of unrealistic expectation and creating real change in 2026

New Year's Resolutions 5 things to actually do this new year (WAFB)

(TENNESSEE VALLEY LIVING) - People will tell you so many things at the start of the year. “Big changes start with small changes” or “It takes 30 days to create a habit.” That may be true (although I haven’t done the research personally), but for me, I’ve often found the phrase that most convinces me to accomplish a goal is Nike’s motto - just do it.

So with that, here are 5 things we’re just going to DO this year.

1) Ask her to coffee

You know that person who wraps every random interaction with the line “We should grab coffee sometime!” Actually do it. Send a real text and offer a real time. Put it on the calendar. Don’t be phony. Be genuine with words and committed to forming new friendships.

2) Consume with intention

Second-screening is sooooo 2025. If a movie is on, watch it. Every bit of it. Don’t scroll through your phone while cramming your brain with background noise from the TV. We’re saying yes to being present and no to multitasking this year.

Local Tip: Did you know Cineplanet in Madison is locally owned?

3) Get rid of it

That appliance that’s still in the box, that blanket that’s fringing on the ends, that alarm that stopped working but may somehow still be able to be fixed… throw it out. No matter how many times you try to convince yourself otherwise, you don’t need it. Trust me.

Local Tip: American Thrift provides a super easy drop-off experience. To quote the best movie ever that is The Grinch, “One man’s trash is another man’s potpourri.”

4) Help before being asked

Before you offer the words “Is there anything I can do to help?” – just find a way. Send a meal. Show up with broom in hand. Mail a nice card. Don’t wait for people to say what’s needed because most of the time – they don’t even know. Figure it out and beat ‘em to the punch.

Local Tip: Tortilla Soup from Rosie’s Cantina works wonders when fighting a cold.

5) Wear the dress

Running shoes don’t have to run your life. If you want to get dressed up for that last-minute dinner on a Tuesday, you have every right. Don’t let the fact that others are wearing tshirts rob you of the joy that comes with wearing sparkly earrings. Shine on, sister.

Local Tip: Elitaire in Huntsville carries all the right accessories for a little extra glam!
