Shining a spotlight on The State Black Archives

The historic resource is a hidden gem located on the Alabama A&M University campus

Heather Adkins discusses the State Black Archives at Alabama A&M University

NORMAL, Ala. (TENNESSEE VALLEY LIVING) - The past meets the present at a location that hosts a plethora of local Black history. The State Black Archives rests atop The Hill of Alabama A&M University- an institution that houses more than 150 years of tradition, stories, and memories within its campus limits.

Now, the archives are breathing new life into old artifacts, artwork, and other mementos that otherwise would have been lost to time long ago.

State Black Archives Curator/Archivist Heather Adkins stopped by the studio to share what is happening at the Archives right now, including a newly opened exhibit and an event series for March.

The Alabama Folklife exhibit focuses on stories, music, home remedies, and superstitions, and covers 200 years of Alabama history, offering an intimate perspective on life for the Black community at the time and how those experiences translate into the present.

Adkins also shared details about a movie series happening on Mondays in March at the archives to celebrate Women’s History Month! Showings are on March 9th, 23rd, and 30th at 6 PM inside the State Black Archives. The events are free to attend.
