Need to Know with Jo: 2026 Oscars Recap

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (TENNESSEE VALLEY LIVING) - Last night, Hollywood came together to wrap an incredible year of movies at the 2026 Academy Awards.

The night was full of big moments and historic firsts. Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history as the first woman to ever win Best Cinematography for Sinners, and Cassandra Kulukundis took home the first-ever Oscar for Best Casting for One Battle After Another.

It was also a huge night for director Paul Thomas Anderson, who won not just his first Oscar, but three awards total for One Battle After Another. The film ultimately took home the night’s biggest honor — Best Picture.

Many expected the award to go to Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which led the night with 16 nominations — the most for a single film in Oscar history. The film still had a strong showing, winning four Oscars, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score.

Watch TVL producer Jocelyn Claborn’s full breakdown above.
