SHEFFIELD, Ala. (TENNESSEE VALLEY LIVING) - There’s a place nestled in North Alabama that’s world-renowned as a hub for creating music magic. The Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, founded by The Swampers in 1969, has been home to some iconic recordings. From The Rolling Stones, Cher, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, and Percy Sledge are just a few of the long list of legendary stars who have traveled down south to lay down tracks at the studio.
Studio Tour Guide Will Allison shared more of the history that has happened within the studio’s walls and how what The Swampers created in Sheffield was a trailblazer in the music industry.
What’s incredible about the legacy of Muscle Shoals as a greater scale is how it was able to blur those lines between race and color. The studio became an oasis for everybody.
— Will Allison
Fast forward to the present, Muscle Shoals Sound Studio is owned and operated by a non-profit organization, the Muscle Shoals Music Foundation (MSMF). Operations Manager Katlyn Lott shared that the studio’s legacy is one they are fighting to keep alive for generations to come.
I didn’t realize just quite the impact that it has on not only people from our area, but people nationally, people internationally. It’s such an incredible thing to witness to be a small town in Alabama...
— Katlyn Lott
