HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (TENNESSEE VALLEY LIVING) - At first glance, it sounds like something designed to make parents cringe: kids making “bird poop paintings” at summer camp. But at Gross Out Camp, hosted by the nonprofit Fresh Air Family, the messy activity is a creative and science-backed lesson that has campers laughing, learning, and seeing nature in a whole new way.
Founded by Verna Gates, Gross Out Camp focuses on connecting children to the outdoors through hands-on education. The organization received $110,000 in financial aid to ensure that cost is not a barrier for families who want their children to attend.
For many campers, the highlight isn’t just the unusual art projects. It’s the freedom to be curious and unafraid of getting dirty. For parents, it’s a reminder that sometimes the best learning happens when things get a little gross.
