HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (TENNESSEE VALLEY LIVING) - Amelia Hopper of Brain Space believes learning should feel exciting for children, not exhausting. Her secret? The “5 C’s” that help kids reconnect with the joy of learning.
The 5 C’s:
- Challenge:
- Kid’s light up when tasks feel just hard enough to stretch their brains without overwhelming them. They naturally seek out intermediate challenges even when success is not guaranteed.
- Competence:
- Children love evidence of improvement and feeling responsible for their success. When they feel capable, their confidence grows. Celebrating progress, even small victories, can remind kids they can do hard things.
- Control:
- Even tiny humans thrive when given autonomy to choose (even with trivial things like a game piece). Giving kids choices helps them to feel empowered instead of feeling pressured.
- Curiosity:
- Curiosity is where the magic happens. Asking questions, exploring ideas, and making learning playful keeps young minds engaged and excited.
- Context:
- Context helps children understand why learning matters. Connecting lessons to real life makes information meaningful and memorable.
According to Hopper, when these five pieces come together, learning stops feeling like a chore and starts becoming an adventure again.
