(TENNESSEE VALLEY LIVING) - They didn’t know what they were getting into. But they knew it had to be done.
The founding of the United States of America is one that was completely unprecedented -- that goes without saying. With every established country up to that point being led by bloodline royals or non-elected rulers, a group of early settlers had no roadmap for building a country that would be “of the people, by the people, for the people.”
Sure, the Founding Fathers had inspirations for an established form of government -- borrowing concepts here and there from other European societies. But when viewed in black and white, these brilliant and brave Americans were doing nothing more than risking it all, hyper-focusing on their shared values and hoping for the best.
“This was an experiment to prove that non-noble citizens were capable of ruling themselves,” says Bill Sommers with the Sons of the American Revolution.
One thing that pushed their mission forward: a constitution, one that would later become the oldest document of its kind to this day.

“No other codified constitution in the history of the world has survived as long as ours,” says Sommers. “Our Constitution was written with the knowledge of our Founders that things change over time. They realized that they could not predict the future and therefore needed to have a governmental structure defined that would allow for unforeseen changes, for an ever-evolving government -- one which would continually evolve into a ‘more perfect union.’”
Today, America remains a country that was built on those very unique principles: liberty and freedom.
Simply put -- it was an experiment that worked.
